You need to find a dentist now ... so how DO you find another dentist in a new city?
We know that finding a dentist in a large city, is not an easy task, especially if you're new to the city, and cannot get recommendations from close friends or family members.
Your new local dentist will be an important health care advisor for your family's dental health and well-being. They should help to reduce, and hopefully, eliminate any serious dental problems your family members may have.
How will you decide...?
Using Listings in Phone Directories
Of course, you could use the local "Yellow Pages" phone directory -- it has a section for dentists.
But some local directories have dozens of pages of listings, so you will have the problem of sorting through ALL those listings!
Would you also really want to choose your new dentist, based on who paid for the best-looking or largest advertisement listed in a bulky printed directory? The listings don't usually provide very much information about those advertised dental practices or dentistry.
Using a Specialized Online Dentists Directory
The advantages of using a specialized online dentists directory, is that you can:
Visit a dentist's website to get a "feel" of the dentist's practice without any obligation.
See what his/her dental offices looks like. Do the pictures, or video, portray an inviting, and successful practice?
Read about the dentist's qualifications.
See what professional associations the dentist is affiliated with.
View the latest technology and equipment that the dentist uses.
Read about the services the dentist/s specializes in.
View articles published by the dentist.
Get map directions from where you are to the dental offices.
Learn what parking facilities there are for patients.
These pointers can help you feel more comfortable about your eventual choice when you find a dentist.
Making an Informed Decision
Make your selection of your local dentist, when you have more information about the dental practice and the dental specialities.
To make your choice of a new dentist easier, on this website you'll find information about:
Different types of dental procedures, such as dental implants
Explanations of special dental terms that dentists use, and
Other topics relating to dental health.
How to Find a Dentist
When choosing a dentist, there are several factors you should take into consideration, before making your decision.
It may not be in your best interests to just find a dentist that's nearest to your home or office. This is even more important especially if you know you need specialized dental services.
Here are some suggestions and questions, to help you find a dentist:
Location of the new dentist
How difficult will it be for you to get to the dentist when you have an appointment?
Will you need to commute during rush hours to get to your appointment?
Dental Services Needed
Do you need a dentist immediately because of an emergency, or do you want to schedule regular check-ups?
Dental Emergencies
Would it be difficult for you to get treatment for an emergency?
What arrangements do they have in place for emergency dental treatment, during non-working hours?
Regular Appointment Times
Will you need your regular dental appointments to be scheduled mainly on certain days, like weekends, or even specific times of the day because of your own busy schedule or work commitments?
Will your dentist be able to accommodate your requests easily?
How far ahead do you need to book to get your preferred times?
Specialized Dental Treatment required?
Will you need to choose a dentist who provides specialized dentistry services, like:
implant dentistry services
cosmetic dentistry services
General dentists will diagnose and treat most dental problems, but many prefer to refer you to a Dental Specialist if you have dental conditions that require a more intensive treatment.
Extended Dental Coverage
Do you have extended dental coverage that will cover most of your costs for your dental expenses?
Your employer may provide this in an Employment Benefits Package, together with extended health benefits.
How much of the dentist's bill is not covered by your Dental Plan?
Currently dentists in some states or provinces are allowed to set their own fees. So even if you have coverage under a dental plan, you may still need to pay an excess (the final difference between your insurers rates and your dentist's fees) yourself, because your dentist's fees are higher than your dental plan is structured to pay for your expenses.
Of course, please do remember most dentists won't be able to give you an exact quote, if they don't know what treatment you need, because you're not a patient yet!
Just be prepared...
Other Considerations in choosing a Dentist
Like most businesses, the fees charged by each dental practice, and the level of service, will vary.
The location of the dentist's office may also make a difference in the prices they charge, for example: dentists fees in many suburbs tend to be lower than for dentists in the downtown business area. Of course, it's always best to get an estimate anyway, before deciding.
So find out more about the various services and procedures of the dental practices you are considering, before making your final decision on choosing a dentist.
